The beginnings of the Department are to be found already in the first
veterinary school, the Veterinary College of Zagreb in 1919. Already in the
first curriculum, subjects called "Biology and Pathology of Fishes, Crabs,
Shells and Mollusks" and "Biology and Pathology of Bees and Silk-worms" were
introduced.
By resolution of the Senate of the University of Zagreb dated December 14,
1939, the Department of Biology and Pathology of Fishes and Bees was
founded as the first teaching and scientific unit of the kind in Croatia and
the Balkans.
The basic activity of the Department is teaching (in undergraduate and
postgraduate studies) and scientific and research work in programmes
financed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Informatics and by
pisciculture and apiculture industry. Within its professional activities
the Department co-operates with fishery (fresh water and salt water) and
bee-keeping organizations in Croatia and internationally, which is based on
longterm contracts on co-operation. The Department and its staff co-operate
with all units of the Faculty as well. There are two subjects in undergraduate
studies: "Biology and Pathology of Fishes" and "Biology and Pathology of
Bees". The Department premises consist of a theatre for practical work of
students, a virological, histological, and bacteriological laboratory,
three wet laboratories, a laboratory for tests on bees, a laboratory for
artificial insemination of queen-bees, an apiary, and a library.
The Libarary, equipped with computers and written material in the field of
illnesses, biology and breeding of aquatic organisms and bees, is the biggest
in this part of Europe. The Department is subscribed to 50 magazines and
special prints of reports of OIE and FAO. The latest books in the field are
regularly purchased. The Library is used by the staff of the Faculty, by
students and experts in fishery and bee-keeping.
